World Water Day

It’s dark out, the path is unmarked, and she’s alone – for hours.

Before Harriet’s village had access to clean water, her daughter Becky spent hours a day walking kilometres to fetch water from a swamp. It wasn’t safe for her to walk alone, she’d often get sick from the dirty water, and she’d miss going to school and playing with her friends. But despite her fears, Becky took on a real-life challenge to provide for her family.

Imagine, at ten years old, showing such courage in the face of danger. A quest for survival marked by true valour.

Imagine, being Harriet and having to send your daughter to walk for water alone. How would you manage the wait for her to return? Excruciating!

Thankfully, we know the impact of the taps turning on: clean water is collected in just minutes and safely, girls like Becky see their daily rhythm change from fear to futures filled with education, mothers like Harriet no longer wait in dread, and families gain hygiene training helping them stop disease and spread health!

It’s working. Pairing clean water with handwashing and entrepreneurial skills changes lives.

March 22 is World Water Day – a global day set aside by the UN to highlight the importance of clean water, and we have a big goal to raise $10,000 – enough to provide clean water for life for 20 more families like Becky’s.
