Background

ACTS Uganda is a long-standing NGO operating in SW Uganda for more than 30 years. Together with their partner, ACTS Canada, they build Gravity Flow Systems (GFS) and provide comprehensive WASH training to help people living in Water Poverty. 

Opportunity Profile: We are looking for a leader to oversee organizational operations. You will work closely alongside the Director of Field Operations, the Administrative Officer and Office Staff to ensure that all HR, Compliance, Administration and Governance needs are met. Your role will focus primarily on the Business, Administration and Compliance side of the Organization. In addition to maintaining the organization (from a compliance, administrative and HR perspective) you are encouraged to assist in growing it through partnerships, business development and grant opportunities.

Specific Tasks (Key areas of accountability)

  • Overseeing the Office and non-programming staff. This includes being a member of the Senior Leadership Team, completing performance reviews for staff and acting in a consistent, professional manner.
  • Ensuring the organization is fully compliant with the laws and regulatory bodies of Uganda. These regulatory bodies include:
    • URA
      • Corporate Filings with the URA and other bodies
      • Directors Filings
    • URSB
    • NGO Bureau and the NGO Act.

You are expected to be very familiar with the requirements of these three entities and to be able to seek counsel from our Lawyer when needing guidance on such matters. The annual filings related to the URA, URSB and NGO Bureau, including the Annual Report and Annual Returns. You are responsible for preparing this paperwork with the support of the Acts team. It is your responsibility to proactively seek out the deadlines and the resources required to ensure that Acts is always compliant with the most recent guidelines. 

  • Work with our Lawyer, Auditor, Accountant and CEO to ensure that best practices in governance are always followed.
  • Work with our Auditors to ensure a smooth audit, and to ensure their recommendations are carried through where appropriate. 
  • Review and oversee staff contracts, hiring practices, HR handbook, and related policies in order to ensure legal compliance to Uganda’s labour laws. Conduct a periodic review to ensure that these are keeping with current laws. You will be fulfilling the key HR responsibilities for the organization.

You will need to proactively oversee the compliance, HR, and Organizational level administrative matters associated with running an NGO in Uganda.

  • MOU Writing for partnerships with Districts.
  • Grant Writing for funding opportunities
  • Business Development where possible.

COMPETENCIES (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Behaviors)

  • This is a management leadership role requiring appropriate levels of education and demonstrated experience. A degree with management courses or relevant experience is a minimum starting point. 
  • Demonstrated experience with Budgeting, Financial Management
  • Familiarity with Google Drive, Quickbooks and Excel.
