Inflation
Recently we celebrated a huge milestone in Kicuzi, Uganda where the community partnered with our Canadian charity to build a safe water system for 17,000 people! When clean, safe water began flowing in that community where unsafe water had previously forced up to 1 in 4 children to miss school, oh – did they dance!
Unfortunately, our next such project in Kanyawambogo Village, where kids like Frank & Eddie live will, at best, be delayed. Inflation is slowly but surely eating away at our impact, as we tackle one of the most pressing problems on the planet. Add in there talks of a recession and it’s an imperfect storm.
Acts for Water is one of Canada’s oldest water charities, yet we’re seeing price hikes we hadn’t ever imagined on critical supplies necessary to build water systems. Here are just a few examples:
- Iron pipes are up 25%,
- Food for our construction crews is up 50%
- Diesel is up 71%
- Cement has increased 37%
All these increases mean it now costs at least 25% more today to provide one person with clean water than it did one year ago. We can feel our dollars and therefore the number of people we can bring water to shrinking each day as we have to cross plans off our checklist. It’s awful.
There’s no question that inflation is hurting everyone. But the people hit hardest are typically those forced to partner with, or outright rely, on charities. The bottom tier always suffers the most. The one-two punch we’re facing with inflation on both sides can be devastating for those who keep walking for water.
But you can help end the long walk for kids like Frank & Eddie.
