Enhancing Water Infrastructure in Uganda

Exciting innovation is taking place!

ACTS Uganda is starting two big projects to help manage water better: the Rural and Urban Management Information System (RUMIS) and the Charity: Water Sensor Program.

RUMIS: Making Water Data Easy to Understand and Use

Imagine seeing important water information in real-timeo we make smart decisions and better support communities in need of clean, safe water. RUMIS does just that. It uses computers to collect and show water data easily and quickly, which helps us take better care of our water. Built on the mWater platform, RUMIS revolutionizes this process by enabling real-time data updates, strategic visualization, and timely decision-making.

The software was created with the help of Uganda’s Ministry of Water and Environment and will launch in the Isingiro District. Our colleagues at the Ugandan Water Project did a short walk-through video below.

Charity: Water Sensor Program: Keeping an Eye on Water Levels

Charity: Water, one of the biggest water charities in the world, has taken the next step in sustainability by developing a comprehensive remote monitoring tool using sensors and cloud computing technology to provide real-time data on water system performance (https://www.charitywater.org/our-work/sensors). With their generous help, we are piloting 15 new sensors to monitor the water levels in our tanks for unusual drops in water levels. This is especially good for places that are hard to reach, ensuring we are informed of the needs in time to go and fix them.

While handpump (well) sensors have been around for a while, creating a cost-effective sensor for Gravity Flow Systems that can monitor a whole tank remotely with its own power supply and cellular signal has been a significant engineering feat.

The Future of Keeping Water Safe

Both RUMIS and the Charity: Water sensors show how we use technology and teamwork to make sure everyone in Uganda has enough clean water. By combining technology and fostering partnerships across governmental, private, and community sectors, we are setting the stage for a future where sustainable water management is not just an aspiration but a reality. We’re testing these tools in three different areas, and our goal is to help communities keep their water safe and plentiful by themselves.

You Can Dive into Innovation with Us
