A Hygiene Revolution in Irimya

“I cried the first time I saw the situation in Irimya.” Said Rachel our Ugandan WASH Coordinator.

“Living my whole life in Uganda, I’d never seen a community in such a state and couldn’t imagine the possibility of change.”

But Racheal and her team patiently visited the households, returning several times to help all the families understand the health benefits of adopting new practices.

They were taught how to build clean latrines, racks for keeping dishes clean while they dry, hygienic shelters for bathing, and tippy tap handwashing stations – all things that help clean water reach its full potential.

After decades of living one way, it took time for this community to form new habits.

Some excitedly adopted the new hygiene rhythms and even used all the means they had to encourage other neighbours who were slower to change.

Like many of us, introducing adjustments to our daily lifestyles can be overwhelming. With a great amount of care and consistent education, however, Racheal’s team soon started to see the new lessons take root.

In fact, months later, it’s amazing to hear that one of the most resistant people is now among the strongest advocates with the best sanitation and hygiene practices!

I’m so proud to see how this community has embraced these new skills! My tears are now those of joy in witnessing the huge strides they’ve made to change.

Community members are eagerly embracing clean water and the practices that will bring health for generations.

Thanks to your faithful support, Irimya has undergone a truly remarkable transformation!
